Technical Guide - Race Format

The New Omnium

This event follows the 2016 changes to the Track Omnium.

We will be following the UCI regulations for this event as they are spelled out in the following document: UCI Cycling Regulations - Part 3 Track Races

  • The winner of the Omnium is the rider who has obtained the highest total of points.
  • In the event of a tie in the final ranking, the places in the final sprint of the last event, the Points Race, breaks the tie.
  • A rider must have completed every event in the Omnium.

Races

Please take some time to skim/review the rules and regulations of each of the races listed below.

Scratch Race

  • Before the start, half of the riders shall be lined up along the railings, the other half lining up in single file in the sprinter’s lane.
  • A flying start shall be taken after one neutralised lap.
  • Riders overtaken by the main bunch shall immediately leave the track.
  • The final placings are determined during the final sprint, taking into account laps gained.
  • The last lap of the race shall be indicated by a bell.

Tempo Race

  • The Tempo Race is a speciality in which the final placings are determined according to accumulated points won by riders during the sprints and by taking laps.
  • After the first 5 laps, sprints shall be conducted every lap. After the completion of four laps, the bell will be rung to indicate the start of the sprint laps.
  • The first rider in each sprint shall be awarded 1 point, including for the final sprint.
  • Any rider that gains a lap on the main field is awarded 20 points.
  • Any rider that loses a lap on the main field is deducted 20 points.
  • Before the start, half of the riders shall be lined up along the railings, the other half lining up in single file in the sprinter’s lane.
  • A flying start shall be taken after a neutralised lap during which the riders shall ride in a compact group at a moderate speed.

Elimination Race

  • A flying start shall be taken after a neutralised lap during which the riders shall ride in a compact group at a moderate speed.
  • A sprint shall be run every lap (A sprint shall be run every second lap on tracks of less than 333.33 metres and every lap on tracks of 333.33 metres or more.)
  • After each sprint the last rider, according to the position of his rear wheel on the finishing line, shall be eliminated.
  • An eliminated rider shall leave the track immediately, failing which he shall be disqualified.

Points Race

  • Intermediate sprints are run off:
    • every 6 laps on the Argyll Velodrome in Edmonton
    • every 5 laps on the Glenmore Velodrome in Calgary
  • The first rider in each sprint shall be awarded 5 points, the second 3 points, the third 2 points and the fourth one point.
  • Points awarded in the last sprint after the full distance will be doubled (10 points, 6 points, 4 points, 2 points).
  • Any rider that gains a lap on the main field is awarded 20 points.
  • Any rider that loses a lap on the main field is deducted 20 points.
  • Where two or more riders are equal on points, the places in the final sprint shall declare the winner.
  • Before the start, half of the riders shall be lined up along the railings, the other half lining up in single file in the sprinter’s lane.
  • A flying start shall be taken after one neutralised lap.
  • A rider shall be considered to have gained a lap and be awarded 20 points when he has caught up with the rear of the largest bunch.

Omnium Points

Prior to the start of the Points Race, a current ranking with the points totals shall be drawn up, and riders will start the Points Race with these points accrued over the first three events. Riders shall add to, and lose points from, their points totals based on laps gained and lost, and points won in sprints, during the Points Race.

Final overall Omnium ranking shall evolve through the Points Race.

The winner of the Omnium shall be the rider who has obtained the highest total of points.
